How safe is the Carnival?

Many people have been asking themselves – and us – whether this year’s Karneval der Kulturen will be safe to attend.
It goes without saying that there can never be 100% security.

To help you decide whether to be with us on the day, we have listed the measures we are taking to make the event as secure as possible.
Our health and safety policy implemented in previous years includes the following:
• Re-routing of traffic
• Evacuation contingencies; no-entry areas
• Localised crowd management
• Information and instructions via PA system
• Paramedic (“Johanniter”) units at intervals along route
• Mobile police units

In addition to the normal precautions, there will be a heavier police presence this year and street closures will involve wider buffer zones. The decision has been taken not to use crowd-control barriers, which affect the character of the event and do little to improve security.

We the organisers have opted to go ahead with the Carnival this year as we are convinced that it does more to promote peaceful coexistence than a cancellation in the face of terrorism would.
That said, the decision to attend a large public gathering is a private one for which each individual is personally responsible.

We’ll be there!
